According to a statement from the Muldersdrift Police spokesperson, Constable Slindile Ntuli, the motive for her actions are still unknown but the matter is being investigated.
The 17-year-old girl was visiting her boyfriend at the Ruimsig informal settlement on Wednesday, 4 September.
According to the police statement, the girl’s boyfriend left her inside the house with his mother, while she was preparing to go to school.

He had gone to the tuck shop and on his way back, he saw his girlfriend was on fire. Her entire body was engulfed in flames and she was screaming and running around. The girl then grabbed her boyfriend’s mother. who also sustained burns.
The statement said that it has been alleged that the girl poured petrol all over her body and set herself on fire.
The girl and her boyfriend’s mother were taken to hospital but sadly the young girl passed away due to the severity of her injuries.
