[WATCH] Police spring into action after shack catches fire

What should have been a regular patrol turned out to be an eventful evening for police officers. While conducting operations they came across a shack engulfed in flames.

Police officers from the Kagiso Police Station were busy with one of their Okae Molao operations on Saturday, 14 September, when they came across a burning shack, and jumped into action.

Just past midnight, the officers noticed a shack engulfed in flames in the Soul City informal settlement.

“It was quiet, everything was locked and everybody was asleep in their shacks,” said Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police.

The officers immediately sprang into action and removed a pile of boxes that was standing close to the burning shack.

“The boxes were going to make it easier for the angry flames to spread quickly to a number of other shacks,” explained Sibiya.

While the police were removing the boxes, some of the residents were woken up by the noise. The officers were concerned that someone could be trapped inside. Residents started joining the police in putting out the fire.

Luckily, it was found later that no one was inside the shack when it went up in flames.

“We as South Africans have witnessed ugly scenes where people were burnt beyond recognition because of fires that started in one shack and later spread to others. Therefore, we must salute our men and women in blue for the prevention skills they displayed in saving this situation. They went out of their way to save lives and property, as mandated by their Code of Conduct,” Sibiya said proudly.
