A 17-year-old girl is the latest on the list of thousands of women murdered in South Africa at the hands of someone she loved and trusted.
“Despite the national outcry and campaigns by a number of social pressure groups, women’s organisations, the government and even opposition parties condemning gender-based violence that most often affects women and children, there are still individuals out there who don’t heed such important calls,” said Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police in a statement.

According to the statement the teenager was stabbed to death at her home by her 22-year-old ex-boyfriend during the afternoon of 7 October. After stabbing her, he fled the scene.
When police arrived on the scene, they found the young girl’s father in the house and he pointed them to the body of his daughter. The police found the young girl lying in the lounge with stab wounds in her back and upper body.
“Police recovered the murder weapon next to the deceased’s body and the paramedics certified her dead on the scene,” said the statement
The perpetrator was later located in Stilfontein, near Klerksdorp, and arrested. He was detained at the Kagiso Police station and has been charged with murder.
Sibiya said the motive for the murder is still being investigated and a case docket has been opened.
