Blacksounds making local music for the masses

This local Munsiville band's music is making its way around the country and they're well on their way to making it big.

Local bands don’t do it like these guys do. Blacksounds is taking the town by storm and rushing to the top at maximum speed. It’s only been a year since they launched their first extended play (EP) album with six tracks. This was a concept test of sorts, to get a feeling for the industry, to learn from the hurdles of creating a first album and to see how the community would respond.

Since then, they’ve exploded in popularity, regularly performing at some of the biggest live shows on the West Rand and in Johannesburg.

“Our best song must be Good Life. It played on Lesedi FM and we had an interview and performance on e-TV,” Kagiso Moreki said. With it, they made the Good Life challenge, where a few hundred fans posted videos of themselves dancing to the song on social media. This did a lot to push their brand forward.

Kagiso and Daniel Moreki wanted to start a five-piece band a couple of years ago, and went straight into looking for a lead singer, bassist and even a saxophonist.

They’ve recently held their second ‘Intimate Session’. Their first small and intimate performance, which was by invitation only, saw them performing for and chatting with a crowd of only 30. The second session drew 300 audience members and a few local and national guest artists joined in. They’re currently planning their third Intimate Session for early 2020 and are looking to make it the biggest one yet.

“The show helps to introduce people to new artists and this leads them to getting more shows,” band manager Kagiso Selele explained. “We want to go bigger now and launch our full album next year. Big things are coming for Blacksounds.”
