Business on a bike – Kagiso riding the wave

The Business on a Bike programme is on its feet and 37 young entrepreneurs hope to make it big with a lot of support from a couple of businesses.

The Business on a Bike Generator programme set out seven months ago to identify young entrepreneurs in Kagiso, hoping to help shape the youth and get the ball rolling for new businesses in the community.

In March, over 50 hopefuls pitched their business ideas in front of an Enke: Make Your Mark and Investec panel, from which 37 entrepreneurs were identified.

The plan was simple: Train the young entrepreneurs in business, build their skills and provide them with practical experience before helping them formulate and implement a business strategy. To get them started, a Qhubeka bicycle and seed funding from Investec Private Bank were handed over to each of them in October at Chief Mogale Hall.

The condition to this programme was that each of the businesses needed to be run off the back of a bicycle.

From here, the 37 entrepreneurs started their 12-month journey with the programme to help them build practical skills and walk them through the early stages of a start-up business.

During this period they’ll have access to in-person and online support from Enke.
