Help farmers fight the drought

Krugersdorpers are coming together to collect 40 000 litres of clean drinking water to send out to farmers in need all across South Africa. But, more help is needed.

South Africa is in the midst of a drought … at least, that’s what most people and the authorities are saying nowadays.

The last few months the West Rand has been experiencing a dry spell, and only recently received some much-needed rain. Some parts of South Africa have not been that lucky though.

Farmers are struggling. They’re feeling the effects of the drought more than most. “People usually think about the animals or the feed they require. Usually, animals can drink unpurified water, but the people on the farms struggle without clean drinking water,” Theresa van der Walt from Oasis in Rant-en-Dal explained. She and owners Pieter Fourie and Annalize Erasmus stumbled upon a post on Facebook by Boere Droogtehulp SA and realised they were in an opportune position to help.

“We need to collect 40 000 litres of water. When we’re done, they’ll pick it up with three trucks and take it to the farmers in need,” Pieter explained.

At this point they don’t have a deadline, and will be done once they have the projected volumes. But, the need being so big, every day counts. Because of this, they’re reaching out to Krugersdorpers to help with this massive undertaking. They won’t be able to do it all by themselves, and are asking people to donate bottles of water to their Oasis shops in Rant-en-Dal and Monument.

Alternatively, people can bring in empty bottles of any kind, and they’ll fill them at their own expense. In the end they’ll need up to 20 000 two litre bottles, which is quite an undertaking. Community members can also buy 25 litre bottles filled with water in one of the shops at R80 each and donate it to the cause.

Lastly, a direct money donation can be made by sticking a note or two in a collection tin in the shops, or by paying larger amounts directly to Boere Droogtehulp at FNB account number: 62801333163, Branch code: 250655 with Reference: Oasis Krugersdorp.
