A greener and cleaner future in Kagiso

Fed up with illegal dumping and littering on the streets, the Kleen Green team is taking on these issues, one park and one tree at a time.

Two young men from Kagiso have decided that they are fed up with the illegal dumping and polluters living in their area.

Justin Khoza and his business partner opened Rokksta Biltong last year and an illegal dumping site near their shop caused problems with pests.

Justin said the lack of trees in especially townships and a culture of littering added to their concerns.

“We wanted to promote a clean and healthy environment for our kids to play in,” he added.

The two men then started the Kleen Green project. The project was developed as a community initiative that aimed at transforming illegal dumping sites in residential areas into environmentally friendly areas, in the process also discouraging dumping and providing alternative ways of getting rid of rubble. They also plant trees to further emphasise their cause of a green tomorrow, today.

“We seek assistance mainly from local school children when it comes to the planting of trees, as this gives us an opportunity to communicate the importance of nature preservation to future generations.”

They also get assistance from Mogale City’s Parks Department which supplies them with indigenous trees and does the major clean-up of rubble.

The group gathered in Kagiso on 1 November to plant some of their very first trees after cleaning up an illegal dumping site.

Helpers from Mogale City, learners from the Tsholetshega Primary School and the Kleen Green team all jumped in to help plant the tress.

The future for this project seems to be bright green as they plan to move into more areas where illegal dumping has become a problem.
