Keeping women and children safe this festive season
The Krugersdorp Police, CPF and other security service providers recently took to the streets to raise awareness.
Every year people around the world celebrate 16 Days of Activism – 16 days during which communities challenge violence against women and children.
In Krugersdorp, members of the Krugersdorp Police, the Community Policing Forum and Apcan Security made it their mission to create awareness about women and child abuse, shortly before the festive season was in full swing.

On 3 December, the group travelled through Krugersdorp and handed out pamphlets with emergency numbers and other information to motorists.
They started in Munsieville, moved to Krugersdorp West, President Square, Valley View Retail Centre and then to Voortrekker Road. Except for pamphlets they also distributed colouring books and soft toys to children.

The pamphlets had safety tips for victims of domestic abuse, emphasising that —
It is essential to
• make sure you have easy access to a telephone
• always carry a list of numbers to call in an emergency
• try to take important valuables such as bank cards and IDs if you leave home
• make sure someone knows where you are heading to
• keep an extra set of keys for your house or car where you can easily get them when required
• always make sure that someone knows the danger you are in
Legal options include laying a charge of violence or abuse at the nearest police station by dialling 10111, and getting a protection order.
