Mogale City hosts World AIDS Day

Speaker after speaker spoke eloquently about the effects of HIV/AIDS in society as well as in families.

Mogale City Local Municipality in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Government hosted a 2019 World Aids Day event.

The event was held under the theme ‘Communities Make The Difference – Check Impilo’, at Kagiso Memorial and Recreation Centre and attracted more than 200 community members as well as speakers from civil societies and non-governmental organisations.

The event started off with a door-to-door campaign, where the community of Kagiso was educated on HIV/AIDS. Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko and MEC for Infrastructure Development, Tasneem Motara led the campaign.

Speaker after speaker spoke eloquently about the effects of HIV/AIDS in society as well as in families. Sibusiso Mncube, a young man who was born with the virus, caught the attention of the audience when he spoke about how he is living with the disease.

Thabang Mphahla, the Gauteng AIDS Council chairperson also gave an account of his organisation’s work. He implored government to start extending its hand in funding civil societies as well as the organisations that do HIV/AIDS work.

Motara also chaired the programme on behalf of the Health MEC, Bandile Masuku, who was abroad. The executive mayors and councillors from the five municipalities including the districts gave their respective reports on the HIV/AIDS activation programmes.

Councillor Diteko Moreotsenye spoke on behalf of the West Rand District Municipality Executive Mayor. Mogale City Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Local Economic Development, Paul Molapo gave a vote of thanks.
