[PHOTOS] Taking on the fireman’s challenge

On 19 November a number of people gathered to see if the could take on the fireman's challenge and beat the Toughest Firefighter Alive team – the N'Zuri team.

Community Policing Forum (CPF) members, firefighters, emergency personnel and others gathered at Coronation Dam recently, to compete in the Combat Fireman’s Challenge.

Teams were made up of four members and each member had to complete one of the four stages.

It was a fun day for everyone who competed and Gerhardt Nieuwoudt, the Regional Commander of Mogale City’s Emergency Services, said they would like to host similar fun days in future.

In stage one contestants had to run along the bottom of the Coronation dam’s grass wall with a breathing apparatus on their backs. They then had to get water from the dam with a bucket, fill a dustbin and run back to the start.

Stage two had contestants doing 30 sit-up, putting on the breathing apparatus and then doing 15 elevated push-ups. They had to pull up a weight with a rope and lower it carefully. After all that there was a tyre-flip back to the start.

Stage three proved to be the toughest of all. Contestants had to move three foam cans across the road, then hit a weight to move it until it reached a marked spot. Next was the doll drag. The doll had to be moved through an obstacle course. Once back at the beginning the three foam cans had to be carried back to their original spots.

In stage four contestants had to do a hose carry past a certain spot and then as close as they could to a foam can. They had to knock over the foam can with the water and then make up two fire hoses.

Times were taken and the team that finished in the fastest time won the competition. There was also an individual challenge.

The N’Zuri team that went to the Toughest Firefighter Competition earlier this year, also competed. N’Zuri means lekker in Swahili.
