[2019 RECAP] Taking a look back at January to April
The year had a tragic start, but as the months rolled by, more positive news came to light.
The year 2019 had a tragic start.
Let’s recap:
January:
• Die News kyk terug op die lewe van Bokka Potgieter wat kort na sy 65ste verjaarsdag gedurende ‘n duiksessie in KwaZulu-Natal dood is.
• A motorcyclist, Anton Botha passed away in a tragic motorcycle accident on his birthday.
• The Krugersdorp/ Roodepoort SPCA seized hundreds of neglected animals from a property in Tarlton.
• Martin Hobbs took on a 581km swim in Lake Malawi to raise funds for The Smile Foundation.

• Sunset Drive Settlers relocation woes start and the News takes a look at the living conditions at their new premises.
• A woman tells her chilling story of how she lost her baby. Nkululeko Nzimande talked about her experience in the Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital.
February:
• Die plaaslike huis vir haweloses, Grace House, hou hul deure net-net oop … vir nou. Daar was vir ‘n geruime tyd sprake dat die gemeenskapsentrum sou sluit, en hulle het in Februarie hard baklei om oop te bly.
• Wes-Randers stroom na registrasiepunte om vir die 2019 nasionale verkiesing te registreer. Die News was daar om dit saam met inwoners te beleef.
• Fibre installation upsets residents when internet fibre provider Evotel moved into the area to install fibre.

• Hoërskool Bekker neem deel aan Radio Jacaranda se #MySchoolRocks-kompetisie en wen met ‘n A++.
• Herman Putter woon op straat met sy dogtertjie wat nog in die laerskool is. Herman het vertel van die pad wat hom tot hier gebring het en hoe dikwels hy met net ‘n Bybel kan voortgaan. Gebed is al wat hom dra.
March:
• It takes a super woman to be a superhero. The News took a look at the life of a very active Sector Community Policing Forum member, Sharday van den Berg.
• Bosasa members are underpaid for dangerous work with immigrants. In the period when Bosasa was featured in the media for its court case, workers at the Lindela Repatriation Centre were on strike for better salaries and working conditions.

• Municipal workers were allegedly sleeping all day and not working. Multiple sources claimed that municipal workers were lounging about on the grass for weeks on end, rather than working.
• Die tennisbane in Kenmare was in ‘n slegte toestand, en daar is gevra wat hieraan gedoen sou word.
• Noordskool skop sy 100-jaarviering met ‘n prettige gimnastrade af. Dié laerskool het deur die jaar verjaarsvieringe gehou omdat dit so ‘n groot mylpaal is.
• Itumeleng’s hearing restored by donors. After months of not being able to hear, Itumeleng Thekiso received a hearing aid from the Pinehaven Hearing Clinic and Beltone.
• Raadop met rioolwalms. Noordheuwel-inwoners het vertel van die aaklige reuke wat hulle uit hul huise gedryf het.
• Woman rebuilds after losing her daughter and her home. Koekie van Aard had to deal with a lot of pain after losing her daughter to a drug overdose.

April:
• Krugersdorp Fire rescues trapped man. The local fire department workers saved a man after a house’s walls caved in on him.
• Restorasiewerk aan ‘n historiese huis, Kilmarnock House, in Krugersdorp-Noord was uiteindelik klaar.
• The Cradle of Humankind unveiled the meticulously crafted statue of Dr Martin Luther Kings Jnr which was added to the Long March to Freedom exhibition.

• Op 3 April is 27-jarige Talbot Stadler na ‘n motorongeluk oorlede. Sy familie het goeie herinneringe van hom met die News gedeel.
• The comic collection king of Krugersdorp, collector Damian de Canha opened the door to his man cave to reveal a massive and expensive collection of comic book collectibles.
• His goal: get more youth in Parliament. Leading up to the National Elections, politician Jarrod Delport spoke about growing up in Krugersdorp, and how he became a 27-year-old politician with a seat at the table.
