[2019 RECAP] Last sporting highlights of 2019

The year ended on a high sporting note with some great highlights.

There were some awesome sporting highlights in the last quarter of 2019.

Let’s recap what happened from September to December:

September:

SPAR Women’s Challenge Face of the Race winner, Sarah Ayres.

• The SPAR Women’s Challenge Face of the Race winner, Sarah Ayres from Krugersdorp, encouraged fellow runners to take part as some of the proceeds would go to the Reach for Recovery Foundation, a breast cancer support group.

• Local canoeists Jaco Lategan and Shelley Robertson prepared themselves for a major canoe marathon by taking on the rapids of the Klip River.

• Young Matthew Fulton finished in eight place at the Union Cyclist Internationale BMX World Championship in Belgium. The small spitfire will one day headline major BMXing events.

• A young kickboxing club in Krugerdorp West, Team Rage Kickboxing, proved that they are a forced to be reckoned with when they sent a few of their young fighters to the Great North 2 Championship. Many of their fighters returned home with medals.

Team Rage Kickboxing is a force to be reckoned with.

October:

• Dynamic Eagles, die Noordskool-trompoppies het ‘n besonderse 2019 gehad. Hulle het aan verskeie kompetisies deelgeneem en telkemale met die eerste of tweede plek weggeloop.

• The U/13 teams from seven different provinces came together at Krugersdorp High School to battle it out during two days of tough 7s rugby.

• Die Wes-Rand Hengelklub staan nog sterk en vier meer as 20 jaar se bestaan in die gemeenskap. Die klub moedig hengelaars aan om aan te sluit en deel te word van ‘die vangs van die jaar’.

November:

• Byron Coetzee achieved a monster birdie putt on the 18th hole at the Krugersdorp Golf Club to overtake fellow KwaZulu-Natal rookie, Matt Saulez, and secure his first professional title on the Big Easy IGT Challenge Tour.

• Team Rage 2 sent 12 young fighters to the Berario K1 kickboxing tournament where each fighter walked away with a medal.

• French rugby player, Scott Spedding, who is a former Monument Primary and Laerskool Krugersdorp-Noord learner, visited his former alma mater in Monument as part of his tour through South Africa. The first team captain had a lot of questions for the international rugby player.

December:

‘n Trotse Marie van der Merwe.

• Marie van der Merwe gesels met die News oor haar vasberadenheid om weer te kon loop. Met trots vertel sy dat ten spyte daarvan dat sy voorheen verlam was, sy haar 50ste parkrun in November voltooi het.

• Aobakwe Seimelo and Mxolisi Nobhala from Kagiso, are two members of their cycling group who placed second in the 947 Ride Joburg challenge.
