[PHOTOS] Driving lesson in the rain for primary school learners

Mogale City in association with Fondation Botnar and the SA Road Federation recently opened their long-awaited Junior Traffic Training Centre in Coronation Park to teach the youth how to be safer on the roads.

Thanks to Mogale City Local Municipality, the South African Road Federation (SARF) and Fondation Botnar, and with the assistance of an array of organisations and municipal departments, the once badly dilapidated Junior Traffic Training Centre (JTTC), which could’ve barely been called that over the past few years, had been given new life.

When the Botnar Child Road Safety Challenge made its way to Krugersdorp all the way from Switzerland, SARF joined in and Mogale City was chosen as the main focal point for safety development. A lot of work had gone into schools, especially in and around Kagiso, to ensure that the children remain safe on the roads. The JTTC was identified, and sponsors jumped on board and repaired and repaved the centre’s roads, placed curbs, put up fences, fix drainage problems, and put up and painted signs and markings.

On its official opening earlier in December, five school patrollers were the first to test out the new training course, along with a few important members of the MCLM and organisations involved.
Manager of Public Safety (chief of traffic in Mogale) William Nchefu happily grabbed a wire car and joined the kids on the road.

Public Safety officers led the children and showed them exactly how to approach stop signs, traffic lights and circles. Except for the rare forgetting to indicate as they turned, the children fared exceptionally well and are on their way to becoming responsible road users, and might teach us older drivers a lesson or two.
