While many are gearing up to go back to school and back to reality, a group of young adults are getting ready to step out into the world on their own.
Twelve years of hard work and worry finally came to an end on Wednesday, 8 January when the matric class of 2019 received the results of their matric finals.

At Hoërskool Monument High eager learners were queuing outside the gate waiting for the school principal, Johann Calitz to give the sign for the gates to be opened.
Johann first spoke to the former learners to congratulate and thank them before the results were handed out.
The school had a pass rate of 99,7 per cent and a university exemption rate of 87,2 per cent – six per cent up from 2018’s 80,3 per cent.

They also achieved a total of 351 distinctions, 52 more than in 2018.
“Monnas is very proud of the academic growth we have seen. That is what we work for,” the school said on their Facebook page.
The former learners congratulated each other and compared their results. One of them told News journalist Natasha Pretorius of his plans to travel abroad, and his dreams of becoming an engineer.
While many will be travelling, others are packing their bags and heading off to university.

Johann also told those who did not get university exemption that there are still ways for them to continue with their studies, and that they should not lose hope.
At Hoërskool Jan de Klerk learners started collecting their results from as early as 8am. While some were not entirely happy with their results, there were those who hopped and skipped out of the school premises, knowing that the new chapter in their lives are starting.
According to the Gauteng Department’s Annual School Report, this school has achieved a 86,7 per cent pass rate, slightly down from last year’s 89 per cent.

The News congratulates all matrics on their results and wishes them luck on the journeys that awaits them.
