A cut and colour for cancer

Teh Podge's Pirates team recently shaved and sprayed participant's hair for cancer research.

During the month of November men around the world grow out their moustaches in support of the Movember movement that creates awareness about testicular and prostate cancer.

Every year teams and individuals raise money for the Movember Foundation that is licensed to the Men’s Foundation of South Africa. During the year and especially November these teams and individuals raise money for the Movember Foundation’s research.

Chantelle Kleynhans’s hair is sprayed different colours.

One of these teams are called the Podge’s Pirates, and late last year they were joined by the clients and employees of Anchor Pub in Krugersdorp North for a Shavathon and Sprayathon.

Although the actual idea behind Movember is to grow your moustache, many grow out their beards as well.

Ken Meyer, one of the Podge’s Pirates explained that most research funds in South Africa go towards cancers affecting women and children.

Last year this team raised R79 000 and the 24-member team’s aim this year was R150 000, an amount that they reached long before the Shavaton and Sprayathon even started.

The Anchor Pub started joining them last year when they had a quiz and all the winners of the quiz donated their winnings to the team.

While many people shaved their heads and sprayed their hair different colours, one participant shaved his hair, beard, moustache and torso. He had lost his grandfather to cancer and partakes in these kinds of events every year.

At R30 a shave or colour, the people were lining up. If you would like to enter a team this year, visit https://www.movember.co.za.
