Arrive Alive operations yield 50 per cent less fatalities
Fatalities over the period were down by 50 per cent from the same time in the previous year.
The festive season has come and gone, and it’s time to look back at what went on behind the scenes throughout December to keep the roads as safe as possible.
While people were leaving for or coming back from their holiday destinations or enjoyed the celebrations in town, 11 Arrive Alive campaigns were held, including two crime-prevention visibility drives.

Krugersdorp and Gauteng Provincial Police, Mogale City Public Safety, the Political Office, Emergency Services, Community Safety, Disaster Management, Fire Risk Management, Community Policing Forum sectors, towing services and private medical and security services all worked together in one massive operation to ensure that people stayed safe over the period.
In total, about 120 people were involved, and about 80 vehicles were used, making this a very effective and highly visible programme throughout Krugersdorp and surrounds.
All of these services came together for large visibility displays, with police and Public Safety vehicles, fire trucks and other services present and ready en masse on the side of the road at highly congested locations. Two roadblocks were held per day.

Fatalities over the period were down by 50 per cent from the same period last year – from 10 fatal crashes and 10 fatal injuries in 2018, down to five fatal crashes and five fatal injuries in 2019.
Pedestrian fatalities were still very high at 54 per cent. Contributing to incidents were mainly speeding, fatigue, failing to wear seat belts and irresponsible alcohol consumption.
