The call that changed everything

After listening to the British singer Adele's winning speech at the 2017 Grammy Awards, she sent an SMS to the breakfast show hoping all would fall into place.

The Cradle of Humankind’s Ilanie Loots Basson is the latest winner of the Secret Sound competition hosted by Jacaranda FM’s morning show, Breakfast with Martin Bester.

The 34-year-old lawyer who works in Pretoria but lives with her farmer husband in the Cradle, recently spoke to the News about her big win.

“I yelled very loudly when I won; I just couldn’t believe it!”

Ilanie opened her practice last year and said the winnings would come in handy, considering all the expenses that go with opening such a practice.

She explained to the News how she came about having the secret sound.

“For months I followed every clue they gave, I sent so many SMSes and finally at the very beginning of the year, a pivotal clue was given. I did my research and scanned through many YouTube videos, and finally found the sound.”

She said her husband had to listen to every possible answer. After listening to the British singer Adele’s winning speech at the 2017 Grammy Awards, she sent an SMS to the breakfast show hoping all would fall into place.

“If it was meant to be, it would be,” she kept thinking.

On Monday, 13 January, while on her way to work, she got the call that would change everything.

“My mouth was so dry, I just couldn’t believe it! I was so worried about the signal that I had to pull over at a petrol station next to the highway to talk to Martin.”

Even though Martin tried to make her change her mind, Ilanie knew she had the correct answer and when Martin announced that she had won, she went numb.

She had just won R100 000.
