Lesufi started the briefing by saying; “The start of the 2020 school year in the Gauteng province has been marred by a series of traumatic tragedies and incidents that have sought to destabilise the system. These matters had required our attention and immediate action in order for us to address them without delay. We are equally determined to ensure that going forward, the impact of these unfortunate incidents are minimised and hopefully eradicated.”
Lesufi and the Gauteng Premier, David Makhura visited the families and extended their condolences.
He explained that when Keamohetswe drowned on the Wednesday, it was reported that the other learners were taken away from the scene immediately while emergency procedures were being performed.
“The matter was reported to the South African Police Service and investigations are under way in this regard,” Lesufi said.
He added that the death of one child is the death of one too many, and that the department is committed to guaranteeing the safety of learners in their care.
Ndobela Lamola Inc (Attorneys) has been appointed to investigate the case and report their findings.
They have already interviewed the parents and the leadership of the school, and a preliminary report can be expected next week.
“Once findings are made, we will take the necessary steps to remedy the situation.”
He also urged the investigation team to finalise the investigation in a timely manner.
