Man dies after community take matters into their own hands

A young man was killed because community members decided to dish out their own punishment.

Police recently responded to the scene where an alleged attacker had been severely assaulted and killed.

In a statement from Kagiso Police spokesperson, Captain Solomon Sibiya, they strongly condemn people taking the law into their own hands and even causing a life to be lost.

On the morning of 26 January, the residents of Sinqobile decided to ‘punish’ a man they claimed had tried to break into one of the houses.

Police were called to the scene where they found a group of people standing next to a house. A 20-year-old man was lying on the ground unconscious and in a pool of blood. He had sustained multiple severe injuries to his head and body. He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but passed away early on Monday morning, 27 January.

No one at the scene was willing to talk to the police about the alleged break-in in which the man was implicated.

“Police have warned residents on numerous occasions to refrain from such inhumane behaviour, but there are those who continue to disregard the law and show no respect for human life,” the statement read.

Kagiso Police are therefore asking anyone who witnessed the incident or know the people who were involved in the attack to call them on 011 969 9000 or 011 969 9065 or 011 969 9059 or 011 969 9152.
