Parents and learners get covered for 2020

Children came in their numbers to assist one another for a common purpose.

Parents and learners recently gathered again to cover stacks of school books for all the learners in the area.

This event was held at the Methodist Church in Africa just after the start of the new school year. To the surprise of the odd passer-by, the venue was buzzing with joy and became a point of attraction as scores of learners and parents gathered to help out.

This is the brainchild of the Extension 9 patrollers which they started last year when street guards saw a need to assist and encourage children to ready themselves for the academic year.

Children came in their numbers to assist one another for a common purpose. They were treated to a variety of ice creams, sandwiches and many more yummy goodies.

The patrollers’ chairperson, Clifford Mogotsi expressed his joy and said, “It feels so good to see kids happy and doing what is best for their future”.

This event is set to prepare future professionals and leaders eager to put themselves on the map.

Philani Mkhonta, 19, who was covering his matric books last year at the same venue, proudly announced that he is currently studying towards a career in Actuarial Science at Wits University and envisages to make his mark and become the best actuary in the country.

Philani explained in layman’s terms that an actuary compiles and analyses statistics, and uses them to calculate insurance risks and premiums.

Sharing the chairperson’s sentiments was the patrollers’ public relations and marketing officer, Walter Komane, who emphasised that more parents need to join in to support the children.

“We need to fill up our venue and ensure 100 per cent support for our kids,” he said.

The patrollers’ secretary, Alfred Butana Moerane thanked the parents, patrollers, the children and the church for making this a success.

“Many thanks to the Methodist Church in Africa for always offering the church as our home for our activities. I would also like to express my appreciation to parents and the community at large for showing such amazing support. To our kids, keep supporting each other and showing others how it’s done,” said Alfred.

This memorable event was proudly sponsored by the area patrollers and local residents who seek unity to prevail in the area.
