West Rand flying squad quick to catch criminals

Intelligent work by the West Rand Flying Squad led to success when they arrested two men on suspicion of numerous crimes.

The West Rand Flying Squad recovered a stolen vehicle and some unlicensed firearms.

In a statement from Captain Mavela Masondo, he said the members acted tactically and intelligently when they followed up on information at about 11.55pm on Monday, 3 February, about a grey Peugeot 308 that had been stolen during a robbery in Stormill, Florida. They recovered the car in Swanieville, Kagiso.

While searching the two suspects and the cars on the premises, the police found two unlicensed firearms – a pistol and a rifle. They also found magazines that were fully loaded with ammunition.

The two suspects, aged 25 and 30, were charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as being in possession of the suspected stolen vehicle.

The Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, commended the West Rand Flying Squad members for their hard work.

“It is through police of this calibre and their enthusiasm that crime can be brought to its minimal in our province. This large number of ammunition recovered matches the number of lives that might have been lost. It is a job well done by these committed members,” he said.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
