When learners of Pro-Practicum School entered the hall for assembly on Monday morning, 27 January, they did not expect to be greeted by seven tough bikers.
‘The crowd’, as Neels Jonker, President of the Wicked Wheels Club calls his fellow riders, visited the school to hand out some goodies to the new learners in the school.
The club originates from Witpoortjie and has been around for eight years. Neels said they do charity work throughout the year; they normally visit an old age home three times a year and hand out gifts at an orphanage over Christmas.
Last Christmas while delivering gifts at the Abraham Kriel orphanage, Neels sent some of the photos to a friend in Mozambique.
This resulted in the word spreading about the work the club has been doing in their community and soon others also wanted to get involved.
“Before we knew it we were inundated with calls from people who wanted to help and donate to our cause,” Neels explained.
Although it was too late to hand out Christmas presents, they decided to help out with back-to-school necessities. They contacted a few school and decided to focus on Pro-Practicum.
The president of the Smoking Guns joined them on Monday when they handed out pencil cases filled with stationery to the new learners at the school.
They also asked the school to make a list of stationery items they still need, and together with Pentel stationery they will sponsor what is on the list.
The left-over pencil cases and stationery will be donated to a school in Roodepoort.
Neels spoke to the children and told them to respect each other, their parents and their teachers, and that they should not keep quiet if they or others they know are being bullied.
