Additional lane for section of Robert Broom

The 0,7 kilometre stretch will be widened into a double lane road. No lanes will be closed.

Motorists who use Robert Broom Drive will soon be travelling on a double-lane road.

The road will be widened from the entrance of Sugar Bush Estate to the three-way stop in front of Hobby Park and Lud Hersch Drive, with a budget of R5 million for the project.

A statement from the Mogale City Local Municipality’s Municipal Manager, Pringle Raedani, said the estimated time of completion is seven months.

The statement also said phase two will entail widening a 0,7 kilometre stretch of Robert Broom Drive between the Sugar Bush Estate entrance intersection and Lud Hersch Drive. This includes the paved surface, storm-water drainage and road furniture.

“Other phases will be considered in future, depending on the availability of the budget,” the statement said.

The road will not be closed for motorists and work will continue on the part in front of the Hobby Park.

It further states that a traffic accommodation plan has been put in place and the upgrade is only about additional lanes.

As for residents in the area, the statement said that they would likely be affected by the noise and traffic congestion during construction. He also said that working hours during construction may be adjusted, depending on the need.

Lynette du Toit, Ward 21 councillor, said road works will start at eight in the morning and end at five in the afternoon. At this stage, no work during weekends is envisaged until the final phase of the project, and even then it will be kept to a minimum.

Raedanie explained in the statement that they chose this section of Robert Broom Drive because according to a traffic-impact assessment, this is a high-volume traffic area where traffic often becomes congested.

Du Toit confirmed that a new traffic light will be put up at the intersection of Robert Broom and Lud Hersch Drives.

A site office will be erected on Robert Broom Drive between Pickard Street and Hanekom Road. A Community Liaison Officer will be appointed soon and the News will publish his contact details as soon as they become available.
