Man who sexually assaulted disabled person arrested

Reporting sexual assault, no matter how difficult, can help the Krugersdorp Police bring perpetrators to book.

“For a survivor, disclosing to someone they care about that they have been sexually assaulted can be very difficult. Police are encouraging people to be supportive of victims and be as non-judgmental as possible,” a statement from the Krugersdorp Police’s communications officer, Captain Raymond Sebonyane said.

He further described sexual assault as any act whereby a person purposefully touches another in a sexual way without their consent, and/ or forces or coerce the person to engage in a sexual act against their will.

“It is not always easy to know what to say when someone tells you they have been sexually assaulted, especially if they are a friend or a family member,” he explained, adding that these victims need support and not to be judged.

The Krugersdorp Police recently arrested a 29-year-old man in Munsieville for, among others, sexual assault. The incident allegedly took place on 24 February at about 8.15pm.

Sebonyane said the man allegedly forced open a door and entered a house on Stokvel Street, Munsieville. Once inside, he sexually assaulted a disabled person and then assaulted a boy who tried to intervene.

The man was charged with sexual assault, malicious damage to property and common assault. He will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court.

“The Station Commander of the Krugersdorp Police, Brigadier Ngwako Mashao condemns any act of violence perpetrated against any person, especially vulnerable groups,” Sebonyane said in his statement.

“Anyone can become a victim of sexual offences,” Mashao said, adding that reporting these incidents will help to bring the perpetrators to book.

The community is being encouraged to report any crime against women and children, and to contact the Crime Stop number on 08600 1011, where they may also remain anonymous.
