Mogale City power supply shutdown postponed

Eskom decided not to shut down its power supply to Mogale City yet.

Concerns were raised and quickly spread across town and on social media when it was revealed on 17 January that Mogale City Local Municipality’s Eskom account was in arrears of nearly R120 million. Eskom posted a notice of intention to shut down the power supply to MCLM, pending further investigations into the matter. Since then, the municipality has made payments towards the debt.

On Wednesday, 26 February, the power utility sent out the following notice regarding its decision about a power supply shutdown to the area: “In order for Eskom to meaningfully engage and consider all the submissions received, it was seen as necessary not to proceed as intended.”

Senior Manager for Customer Services in Gauteng, Daphne Mokwena, further noted, “We will also continue to engage with all relevant stakeholders and inform the public by the week of 6 March 2020 of the outcome of the submissions received and the final decision on the matter”.

This said, Eskom hopes to apply pressure on the municipality, saying, “Eskom trusts its decision will encourage the affected parties to put pressure on the municipality to meet its constitutional, statutory and contractual obligations and make good on the repayment of the electricity debt”.
