Coronavirus statistics – is it as bad as many think?

The past:
• The first cases of an unknown virus were confirmed by the Chinese government on 31 December 2019.

• From 13 to 14 January, the first cases were reported to have spread to Thailand and Japan.
• The first case of the virus in the USA was confirmed on 21 January.
• The first reported death from the Coronavirus outside of China was confirmed in the Philippines.
• This specific strain of the Coronavirus was categorised as Covid 19 by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on 11 February.
• The first case of the Coronavirus in South African was confirmed on 5 March, in KwaZulu-Natal.

• China still has the highest total confirmed cases of the Coronavirus in the world at 80 559 total cases. South Korea comes in second with 6 593 cases.
• China’s total cases have come down from 80 559 to 23 723 currently active cases. South Korea’s total cases have only come down from 6 593 to 6 416 active cases.
• South Africa shares the position for lowest amount of confirmed active cases, at only 1 case, with Serbia, Poland, Liechtenstein, Gibraltar, Costa Rica, Bhutan, Ukraine, Tunisia, Nigeria, Monaco, North Macedonia, Lithuania, Jordan, Dominican Republic, Armenia, Andorra and Afghanistan.
• The estimated population of South Africa sits at around 59 million. Confirmed infected patients with the Coronavirus, in relation to the country’s population, is about 0,00000169291%.
• From a total of 98 771 cases, there have been 3 389 deaths (3,43%) and 55 671 (56,36%) people have recovered, leaving 39 711 (40,21%) active cases.
About 84% of active cases are categorised as mild, with about 16% as serious or critical.
• Of the closed cases, 94% of patients had recovered or were discharged, and 6% died.
• Seeing as the world’s population sits at around 7,7 billion, the percentage of currently active cases in relation to the world population is about 0,00127134%.
