Local firefighter works tirelessly to help fight Western Cape fires
Working on Fire's Frank Maseko from Mogale City is helping to save lives in the Western Cape.
The Western Cape is known for its fatal and deadly runaway fires. Local firefighter, Frank Maseko, is one of the many from Working on Fire who has worked tirelessly to try and save lives in the Western Cape.
Working on Fire General Manager in Gauteng, Stephen Boyes, said the firefighters are there to protect the environment, especially the fauna and flora in the Table Mountain National Park.
Maseko said the team is really busy. They spend long hours on the fire lines because the area is mountainous, which makes it difficult to contain fires easily.
“Fires have been very difficult to fight because of the hot, dry and windy conditions. The landscape is difficult to work on, but we have prepared well for the fire season,’’ said Maseko.
Despite the hard work and pressure, Maseko and the team are fighting through the fire, making this a great learning experience, “Our crew members are extra careful during fire call-outs and on the fire lines. We are also gaining more experience in working with aerial resources and being exposed to a variety of landscapes,” he added.
They were able to save more lives and properties from the dangers of fires in and around Cape Town, and nearby towns. The team is currently based in Newlands and is doing a marvellous job.
Most of the fires the team attended to were at or near Table Mountain. A major fire he recently worked on was in Du Toit’s Kloof near Paarl, which lasted for 10 days.
