Lockdown: Charity pledges to serve in the interest of the homeless
The charity, that offers food to the homeless, is asking for clothing and food supply to assist the homeless during the 21-days lockdown.
In his televised address to the nation, President Cyril Ramaphosa said South Africa will be on a 21-day lockdown, starting at midnight on Thursday, 26 March until 16 April.
Honeyfield Charity, that usually gives food to the homeless every Sunday, is finding themselves very concerned about those living on the streets.
During the charity’s last drive, over 200 people – men, women and children – were fed. For some it was their first meal in days.
Andre van Zyl from Intellidrive, that works with Honeyfield, said he is begging for assistance in and outside Krugersdorp.
“Winter is around the corner and we are also facing the dreaded coronavirus. Times are tough for everyone, but we are asking for any form of donation, be it food, clothing or anything else that might assist our fellow brothers and sisters,” Van Zyl said.
The organisation currently depends on donations from the public, but they are becoming fewer. Pensioner Anne Bezuidenhout, who is the owner of the charity, mostly buys what they need from her own pocket.
Most of the people who come to get food from the organisation are from shelters around the CBD area and from the streets. The charity is genuinely concerned about their health amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We urge people to please pledge your assistance and get in contact with Honeyfield Charity Organisation,” Van Zyl added.
To make any kind of donation, please contact Anne Bezuidenhout on 082 378 1395.
