A man who was arrested for being in possession of stolen property and theft received a four-year jail sentence in the Magaliesburg Magistrates’ Court recently.
Mothusi Mfundisi was found guilty in February and was handed down his sentence on 23 March. He is to serve a two-year jail sentence for being in possession of the stolen property, and two years for theft.
Magaliesburg Police spokesperson, Sergeant Rebecca Phiri sent a statement explaining that Mfundisi was arrested on 13 June 2019 after he had been found with stolen railway tracks in his possession.
“The accused will serve four years direct imprisonment, with no option of a fine,” Phiri said.
Her statement said that he stole the Transnet railway tracks somewhere in the Magaliesburg area.
“This sentence serves as a great punishment. People can lose their lives when the railway tracks are stolen and the train falls due to these illegal activities. Our economy also becomes affected as trains transport different goods and our country’s citizens,” Phiri’s statement read.
She added that the acting station commander, Captain Alex Mafhungo welcomed the sentence and applauded the investigating officer, Sergeant Helms Simali for making sure that Mfundisi was arrested.
Mafhungo also said that anyone found committing similar offences will be arrested and will face the consequences.
