SAB takes road constriction by trucks on Chamdor Road very seriously

Residents and businesses are fed-up with trucks parking in the road and say it is becoming a safety risk.

Some of the business on Fransen Street, Chamdor as well as business owners say they are fed up with large trucks taking up the whole road in front of their businesses, as this is becoming a safety concern.

They claim the trucks, contracted by the South African Breweries (SAB) in Chamdor, park in one of the four lanes of the road to wait their turn to enter the premises.

Except for these trucks parking in front of businesses, the constriction they cause also force road users sometimes to drive into the oncoming lane to overtake the parked trucks.

According to reports these trucks started parking in the road in 2019 and some businesses claim there is almost no space for their trucks to enter or leave their premises when they have an abnormal load that needs to be delivered.

When confronted, the truck drivers were allegedly very rude. They also sometimes play loud music and clean their trucks in the middle of the road, leaving rubbish everywhere.

The News contacted SAB for comment, which said in their feedback that they were aware that some of their third-party carrier vehicles have been obstructing traffic on the road at its Chamdor Breweries.

They apologised for any inconvenience caused and acknowledged that it was an issue the company was already in the process of addressing.

“SAB is investing in both short and long-term solutions to ensure that this issue is dealt with expediently and with efficiency,” their reply stated, adding that they have since appointed traffic marshals to ensure that the congestion is mitigated and that trucks are kept off the road and out of neighbouring business entrances and exits.

“SAB takes non-compliance by carrier vehicles very seriously. We are continuously working on solutions, a number of which have already been implemented such as scheduling, vehicle tracking and the installation of intelligence systems,” explained the statement.
