Free screening and testing for Covid-19 in Krugersdorp

These sites are open to the general public, and there is no prerequisites to getting screened.

Entering into the next stage of the lockdown, free Covid-19 screening and testing stations have been put up around town. Qualified nurses and other relevant health practitioners are stationed under gazebos, in ambulances and in parking areas around town.

The screening sites are open to the general public, and there is no prerequisites to getting screened. Anyone can show up, speak to the staff on hand, get screened and receive further information at no cost. The sites will be open from 10am to 4pm.

On Monday, 6 April, the public could be screened for Covid-19 at various shopping centres around town. Most of the screening centres were in parking lots.

Spokesperson for the West Rand District Health Services, Thuso Montwedi said on Monday, “We are currently doing the north side of Krugersdorp. Today we will be going to Kagiso.”

Both News journalists, Natasha Pretorius and Jaco Human decided to get screened during the day to experience the process first-hand. After providing the health workers with a few general personal administrative details, they were asked the following questions: Do you have a dry cough? Do you have a sore throat as if you’re swallowing glass? Do you have difficulty breathing as though someone is sitting on your chest? Have you travelled outside of South Africa in the past 14 days? Have you been in contact with anyone who has travelled outside of South Africa in the past 14 days? Have you been in contact with anyone who has said they had been tested positive for Covid-19?

It was found that neither journalists needed to undergo further screening or testing.

These initial screening questions determine whether it’s necessary for a person to be screened further, or be sent for a physical Covid-19 test. Whereas the screening only involves a few questions to determine whether a person could have been infected with the virus, the test itself will confirm a positive or negative status.

Only the initial screening was done at the above-mentioned locations. The Covid-19 test is done at another location, to which a person may be taken if the screening shows it to be necessary.

The News will publish updates on upcoming screening opportunities as soon as the West Rand District Services has communicated them.
