Correctional Services say offenders have what they need during lockdown – despite claims

After a concerned citizen questioned the safety of offenders during lockdown, the Krugersdorp Correctional Services said they are doing what needs to be done to keep the offenders safe.

The News recently received a letter from a concerned citizen regarding the measures taken by the Krugersdorp Correctional Services during lockdown.

The writer, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of backlash, wrote: “I am highly concerned about the hygiene in the holding cells of the Krugersdorp Correctional Services. For the past week there have been no toilet paper and no soap. This is highly dangerous now, especially with the coronavirus. Their internal tuck shop is closed, so they cannot buy any and they are also under lockdown for visitors, so nothing can be taken to them.”

The News contacted the Krugersdorp Correctional Services, which disputed all allegations.

According to the Correctional Services response, toiletries like soap, toilet paper, toothbrushes and laundry soap are issued twice a month. The offenders were issued these toiletries on 25 March and if the need arises, additional toiletries will be issued.

They added that units are being disinfected twice a day, and on 27 March cleaning materials such as bleach, general-purpose liquid disinfectant, liquid dish washing soap, a multi-bacterial disinfectant, deo blocks for toilets, and black dip for the pipe shafts, courtyards and drains were issued.

“Offenders are afforded the opportunity to make purchases from the tuck shop on a monthly basis, and the last purchase was on 26 March,” their reply stated.

Purchases for April will be done today, 7 April and they confirmed that the tuck shop is well stocked during the lockdown period.
