Imagine having to stay at home with your family but only a few hundred metres from your house zama zamas, or illegal miners, are continuing their activities.
A resident of the Eleadah complex on the R28 towards Randfontein, took a video on Tuesday, 14 April, to show how active illegal miners are behind their complex.

In the video that was secretly taken over the boundary wall, more than 10 people can be seen mining in the field behind the complex.
There are also a number of bags, believed to be filled with gold-bearing material.

He confirmed that he did inform the police about the illegal activities. The News also asked the Krugersdorp Police what was being done about the situation, to which their spokesperson, Captain Raymond Sebonyane said they would have to go and look for themselves.
When Muzila spoke to the News in January, he confirmed that the illegal miners had started mining behind the complex in November 2019.

He added that residents felt they were being intimidated as the illegal miners’ ‘security’ would stand next to the boundary wall during the day. They fire their guns at all hours and have loud parties behind the complex.
Residents said they were not only afraid for their own safety, but also that the ground could cave in because of all the digging.
