Gauteng Province reports 1 026 recoveries from Covid-19

Gauteng Province is ramping up testing with Premier David Makhura stating that the province is committed to screening 5 million people by the end of July.

The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Gauteng, as of Monday, 4 May, is 1  661 with 1026 recoveries and 14 deaths.

Out of a total of 8 781 contacts traced, 6 179 people have completed the 14-day monitoring period with no symptoms reported and they have now been de-isolated.

A total of 68 people are currently hospitalised in public and private facilities.

The breakdown per district is as follows:

  • Johannesburg – 954 cases with 620 recoveries
  • Ekurhuleni – 360 cases with 263 recoveries
  • Tshwane – 211 cases with 105 recoveries
  • Sedibeng – 21 cases with 6 recoveries
  • West Rand 51 cases with 32 recoveries
  • Unallocated cases within the province – 64

The Gauteng Province announced that they are ensuring that more people are tested for Covid-19 in the province.

Testing will be offered to all vulnerable groups who are most at risk of contracting Covid-19. These include older people and people with other medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease.

The tests on these groups will be done even when they do not display any symptoms of Covid-19.

To date, 1 799 704 people have been screened across the province with 25 838 tests conducted.

Until now, tests were mainly conducted on people who exhibited flu-like symptoms such as fever, tiredness, difficulty breathing and dry cough.

Makhura committed the province to screening 5 million people by the end of July and to test 3 000 people daily.
