A house robbery suspect was arrested after attacking and stabbing two people in their home in Tshepisong, Krugersdorp on 10 May.
The complainant alleged that he and his younger brother were inside their home when they heard a noise outside. They went out to see what was causing the noise, and found two people embroiled in a heated argument with unknown men.
As soon as the two noticed the complainants, they attacked and stabbed them with sharp objects. Thereafter the attackers ran to their place of residence where they collected their firearms. Residents who were nearby ran in different directions to take cover when the attackers pointed the firearms at their victims.
The police were called to the scene and the attackers fled. Some members of the community chased after them, and managed to apprehend one. He was assaulted in the process and later handed over to the police.
Kagiso Police station commander, Brigadier Themba Maduna said taking advantage of the current situation and seeing an opportunity to commit crime will never be tolerated. Those implicated will be named and shamed.
“We appreciate the action by those community members who apprehended the suspects, but we also strongly condemn beating up the suspects because the same community members might also end up being arrested,” said Maduna.
The 26-year-old suspect is in hospital under police guard where he is being treated for the injuries he sustained when the residents assaulted him.
He is facing charges of house robbery and assault.
