A 26-year-old woman was arrested at Sinqobile in Kagiso on 11 May for practicing unlawful means of terminating a pregnancy.
“Our sector police members were attending to complains when they received another complaint at about 4.30pm in Sinqobile. They went to the given address where they found the woman’s live-in boyfriend who led them to the bedroom. The police were shown a foetus and blood on the bed.
“The boyfriend further informed the police that his girlfriend conducted an illegal abortion and was thereafter taken to the local hospital. Police followed up the information and eventually traced the woman at the hospital and put her under guard. A case docket of concealment of birth was opened against the woman,” said a statement by the Kagiso Police.
The Kagiso Police station commander, Brigadier Themba Maduna, appealed to anyone who might be faced with a decision to terminate a pregnancy to do so legally.
“Practising back yard methods to terminate pregnancy can harm your life and those around you in an extreme way, and is punishable by the law,” Maduna said.
The woman will appear in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court as soon as she is well enough to face the charges.
