The case docket against the seven security guards based at the Lindela Repatriation Centre was not placed on the roll at the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court due to insufficient evidence.
The guards were handed over to police and arrested on 15 May for allegedly aiding in the escape of 37 illegal immigrants.
The seven appeared in court on Tuesday, 19 May.
According to a statement released by Phindi Mjonondwane, Regional Spokesperson for Gauteng for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the docket has been referred back to police, with instructions of investigations that must be conducted. Once those investigations are concluded, the docket will be brought back to the NPA for a decision.
