Krugersdorp High School gears up for the return of its learners

To prevent any of their learners missing out on work, all classes are being be done live on Microsoft Teams

Krugersdorp High School management and staff have been very busy ensuring that the school is ready for the return of its learners.

The school had two deep-sanitization sessions – one was done in April by the Mogale City Response Team, and the other was done in the last couple of days by the Bidvest Team on behalf of the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE).

Desks have been moved 1,5 metres apart.

A statement released by the school said they have ensured that the various measures stipulated by the GDE have been put in place. Class sizes have been trimmed down to 20 learners per class. Desks are spaced 1,5 metres apart.

The school has bought multiple thermometers and the learners will have their temperatures checked when entering the school premises. Since before lockdown, each classroom has had hand sanitizer available for the learners to use throughout the day. Each classroom will be cleaned on a daily basis after the learners have left.

Masks, hand sanitizer, a temperature monitor and disinfectant will be in every classroom.

The school’s management team has been provided with their personal protective equipment PPEs, and they are awaiting the delivery for the rest of the school.

Under the guidance of principal Ivan Bailey, a specific procedure has been set in place that will be introduced at the school as a new normal is being developed. The learners will be dropped off at the gate next to the Rugby C Field, one at a time. The parents may not leave until their children have had their temperatures taken.

The learner will then answer a few health-related questions and will proceed into the school after having been screened.

Classrooms have been fumigated and disinfected.

The learners will then go to the rugby field and be allocated a classroom, after which they will be escorted to their classes and get ready for the day. In order to minimise movement within the school, the learners will remain in their designated classrooms and will connect to their teacher via their device.

To prevent any of their learners missing out on work, all classes are being be done live on Microsoft Teams. The children will interact with their educators throughout the lesson, which will run for 60 minutes. As the lesson ends, learners may stand up, stretch their legs, take a step out for some fresh air, or go to the bathroom, or to grab a bite to eat, in order to practice social distancing.

Food will be pre-ordered and delivered to the classrooms, while learners needing comfort breaks will be escorted to the bathrooms. The school day will end at 2pm. Practicals and catch-up lessons will take place after school to ensure that no child is left behind.

“Because Krugersdorp High School has been educating the learners from the beginning of April, we have not skipped a beat during the lockdown. As the teachers are trained on Microsoft Teams, teachers, parents and learners who have co-morbidities at home are able to prepare or access all lessons remotely.”

Furthermore, we initiated an innovative drive-thru data program whereby learners struggling with the inflated data prices in our country are able to access our platforms during and after lockdown as the other grades return to school in the phases government has planned.”

Whether or not the school opens on Monday, 1 June, Krugersdorp High School will be ready whenever the Department of Education states that learners need to return. We have done all in our power to ensure that we have all procedures in place for a successful continuation of schooling,” their statement concluded.
