Ten arrested on Youth Day for defying Level 3 alcohol restrictions

They have appeared in court briefly in terms of the Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002 regulations.

Police have arrested 10 people including a shebeen owner from Kagiso on Youth Day for consuming and selling liquor during the Level 3 Covid-19 lockdown.

In terms of the Level 3 lockdown regulations, no person is allowed to sell liquor from Fridays to Sundays, including public holidays.

Police have opened a case against the 10 who are facing charges related to the contravention of Covid-19 regulations. They have appeared in court briefly in terms of the Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002 regulations.

“We urge our people to respect the law and comply to save lives. Arrogance and defiance will not help us as citizens to overcome the pandemic, but will rather make matters worse. Drinking in public is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by law,” warned the acting Kagiso Police station commander, Colonel Peter Mabuso.
