Residents apprehend attacker following armed robbery

'The victim’s friend screamed for help and residents responded swiftly' – police.

Residents who are fed-up with the spiralling crime assisted robbery victims by apprehending one of their attackers.

Captain Solomon Sibiya, Kagiso Police spokesperson said the incident took place on Tuesday, 11 August in Tshepisong.

“The victim alleged that at about 7am that day, he was on his way to work with a friend. When they were going past the library, three thugs suddenly appeared. One of them was armed with a firearm and his accomplice was in possession of a knife. The victim’s friend showed some resistance, fought back and pushed one unarmed attacker to the ground.

Two of the attackers fled the scene, but the one with the firearm remained behind and took the victim’s two cellphones at gunpoint. The victim’s friend screamed for help and residents responded swiftly.

“They gave chase and managed to apprehend the suspect. He was later handed over to the police. The two cellphones belonging to the victim were recovered and later given back to him.”

The 29-year-old suspect was detained at the Kagiso Police Station where a case docket of armed robbery was opened.

Two of his accomplices are still on the run, and police are investigating the case.

Members of the public can also use our SMS line: 32211 or send their tip-offs via the My SAPS app and remain anonymous.”

Brigadier Themba Maduna, the Kagiso Police station commander added, “We want to thank our residents for heeding our call of not taking law into their own hands. Citizen’ arrests are permitted and appreciated as we must work jointly to get rid of criminality in our areas, but doing so within the boundaries of the law. I wish all residents to act in the same manner when they have cornered a suspect.”
