Learners and teachers at Curro Krugersdorp High School recently participated in the trending #JerusalemaDanceChallenge.

The aim of the challenge, which has taken SA by storm, is to spread much-needed positivity amid the Covid-19 pandemic. For the past few weeks the challenge has been trending even on international social media.

As young people in this difficult time our learners are faced with many challenges, and the aim was to boost morale and get active in a fun way,” said Amoryn Wright from Curro.

She explained that the dance challenge can take place even with participants observing social distancing and wearing masks. It was the first group activity at the school since the beginning of 2020.

“The aim was to remind our learners that although we have to keep each other at a distance, we are closer than we have ever been as a school family. The challenge also served as a reminder to us all of how fortunate we are to be one of the few schools to have all our grades staggered, but present every day,” Amoryn said.

On Wednesday, 12 August, Grade 8 to 12 learners, teachers and coaches gathered on the sports field and stood on their marked-out spaces to dance to this popular gospel song.

Amoryn explained that the dance challenge was the brainchild of their Executive Head, Annemarie Lombard and the High School Phase Head, Jen Westermeyer, while Aamir Samaai assisted with the final production.

The challenge has given the school a new sense of camaraderie, and Amoryn said the joy and support on social media have been great.

“We would like to challenge all corporate companies, schools and other local institutions in Krugersdorp to take up the #JerusalemaDanceChallenge,” said Amoryn.
