A man was hospitalised after his girlfriend had thrown boiling water on him.
Captain Solomon Sibiya, the Kagiso Police spokesperson confirmed a case of grievous bodily harm (GBH) is being investigated and said the incident took place at about 8pm on Saturday, 15 August. The man told police that he visited his girlfriend’s place at the Madala hostel that night to collect his luggage which he had prepared as he was leaving to KwaZulu-Natal.
On arrival at her place, his girlfriend told him that someone had borrowed his luggage bag. An argument ensued between them and the man decided to leave. A few minutes later his girlfriend followed him to his place and found him sitting in his bedroom.
“The girlfriend apologised and attempted to mend their relationship, but the man refused to engage with her. The girlfriend then went to the kitchen where she found boiling water, poured it into a jar and eventually threw it over him before fleeing.”
Captain Sibiya added the man had sustained burn wounds to his back and lower body, and was rushed to hospital for treatment. He only managed to lay a charge after being discharged four days later on Wednesday, 19 August.
“The woman is still on the run. We are appealing to anyone who knows of her possible whereabouts to please contact the Kagiso Police on 011 696 9059/ 9065/ 9067, or alternatively the Crime Stop number line on 08600 10111.
Sibiya added, “Gender-based violence is not always a one-way stream affecting one specific gender; it affects both sexes. The manner in which someone was raised and developed plays a vital role in someone’s life and in relationships. Parents must make it their sole responsibility to educate their children at an early age about respecting the opposite sex, and the benefit thereof in future.”
