Kagiso Police have arrested another two people for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition on Monday, 24 August.
This brings the total number of people arrested for being in possession of a firearm and ammunition in just two days to five. On Sunday, 23 August, three men including a 17-year-old were arrested for the same offence in two separate incidents.
In the latest incidents, Captain Solomon Sibiya, the Kagiso Police spokesperson said two men aged 38 and 44 were arrested on Monday night in Swanieville in two separate incidents. In the first incident, police received a tip-off that a 38-year-old man in Swanieville was in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Upon arrival at the given address the police found the suspect and started to ransack his house. A silver and black Norinco 9mm pistol with filed-off serial numbers and rounds of ammunition were found hidden in the suspect’s wardrobe. He was arrested and later detained.”
Captain Sibiya also gave information about another similar incident which took place on the same day in which a 44-year-old suspect was cornered and arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
That was after police had received a tip-off about a gang that was planning to commit an armed robbery. The police followed up on the information, collected relevant evidence and eventually arrested the suspect who later led them to his residence where an unlicensed 9mm Norinco pistol, an empty magazine and 13 rounds of ammunition were found in an wardrobe. He too was detained.
Both these suspects are expected to appear in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court soon. Brigadier Themba Maduna, the Kagiso Police station commander applauded his members’ diligence, commitment and the consistency they have displayed in ensuring that firearms are removed from the wrong hands.
