Regarding Thursday morning’s incident, reports from the scene indicate that a white tanker truck driving towards Muldersdrift careened off the road, broke through the middle barrier and entered the oncoming lane, colliding with a fully loaded tipper truck. It is as of yet unclear what caused the tanker driver to lose control of the truck.

Netcare 911, the Krugersdorp Fire Department and other rescue services responded and arrived on the scene a short while later.

“The driver of the tanker truck sustained moderate injuries and was treated on scene before being transported by a private ambulance to hospital for further treatment,” stated Shawn Herbst, Netcare 911 Media Liaison Officer.

The fire department used hydraulic tools to free the driver of the tipper truck from the wreckage. After being stabilised and owing to the serious nature of his injuries, a Netcare 911 helicopter airlifted him to a hospital for further treatment.

Operations at the scene reportedly took about two hours to complete.
