A successful operation led to the arrest of 63 suspected illegal miners and undocumented persons on Tuesday, 8 September.
Captain Raymond Sebonyane, Krugersdorp Police spokesperson said the operation was a joint effort between the police, the National Intervention Unit, the SAPS Airwing, the South African National Defence Force, Sibanye Stillwater Security and Fidelity Security.
“The main focus of the operation was on illegal mining, monitoring compliance with the Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002 Level 2 regulations, and to make sure that the community of Krugersdorp is safe,” Sebonyane said.

He explained that the various zama zama gangs often clash and that firearms are usually involved which, in the past few weeks, has led to the death of one security guard and three others being wounded.
The community of West Village is also affected by illegal mining related crimes,” he added.
During the operation, 63 suspects were arrested for illegal mining and being undocumented. The police confiscated 32 bags of gold-bearing material, 33 phendukas, nine gas bottles, 12 electric motors, 28 phenduka stands, one wheelbarrow, seven buckets with steel balls, and one dustbin.

Those arrested during the operation will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court in due course.
Krugersdorp Police station commander, Brigadier Ngwako Mashao welcomed the success of the operation and thanked all the members involved. He condemned the illegal mining operations in and around Krugersdorp, and requested that members of the community report these illegal activities immediately.
