Man escapes fatal injuries at infamous intersection

A bakkie driver was lucky to escape with his life after he was involved in a collision with a truck at the infamous intersection of Paardekraal Drive and Voortrekker Road.

A man miraculously escaped fatal injuries at the infamous intersection of Paardekraal Drive and Voortrekker Road on Tuesday afternoon, 8 September.

Shawn Herbst, Netcare 911 spokesperson explained their paramedics responded to a call-out to a collision at the intersection at 2.27pm.

“Reports from the scene indicate that a truck and a bakkie were involved in a collision,” Herbst said.

Paramedics found the man in the bakkie in a stable condition but trapped inside. The West Rand Fire and Rescue Services had to use hydraulic tools to free him while medics treated him.

The truck struck the bakkie on the driver’s side.

Once freed from the wreckage the man declined ambulance transportation to hospital,” Herbst said.

The News passed the accident scene later the afternoon and witnessed that the roof of the bakkie had to be cut off in order to free the driver.

The truck hit the bakkie on the driver’s side and the passenger side of the bakkie was pushed into a pole. Paramedics, public safety and Community Policing Forum members were on scene while traffic was moving slowly but consistently.

West Rand Fire and Rescue Services were on scene.

A warning about the traffic back-up and the accident on the Krugersdorp News‘ Facebook page sparked outrage as the intersection is notorious for horror crashes.

The husband of the woman who lost her life at the same intersection in October 2019 questioned how many people still need to get hurt before something is done about the intersection. It seems there is little to deter road users coming from the Muldersdrift side from not obeying the speed limit or taking chances when the traffic light turns orange.

I am not leaving matters the way they are any longer. I intend to start a real campaign regarding this intersection, even if it means I shall have to fight the Council in court regarding this,” wrote Gerhard Buys whose wife lost her life there last year.
