KHS fun days bring some levity to a difficult school year

With schools back in full swing in September KHS decided it was high time for a few fun days to get the stress off their learners' shoulders.

Back to school means back to long days of studying for exams, doing homework and listening to in-class lessons.

Considering the general pressure everyone’s been under since the Covid-19 pandemic struck the world, there’s a rising concern that school learners are under exceptional stress. But, there’s always some light at the end of every tunnel and some fun to be had around every corner.

Krugersdorp High School (KHS) injected some levity into the school day recently by hosting a few fun days for their learners and teachers.

The class of 2020 rolled out of bed and came to school in their pyjamas,” said Lauren Jooste-Coetsee, KHS Marketing Director about their Grade 12 group.

“This was a blessing in disguise as it happened on the coldest spring morning.”

It seemed that the rest of the learners and teachers who had to pitch up at school in their usual uniforms were slightly but playfully jealous of the matric lot in their comfortable PJs.

The next day, the fun continued as learners came to school cross-dressed, with the boys adorned in skirts and the girls in baggy pants.

“There has been a new-found respect for many of the women who walk around in miniskirts and high heels for hours on end,” Lauren mentioned with a chuckle.

Some of the boys’ feet were in agony by the end of the day.” For day three, the learners came to school in their fanciest formal suits and dresses. The idea was to dress for success as they ascended into young professionals towards the end of their school career.

Snug as a bug, this KHS matric girl was happy to face the cold day in her unicorn pyjamas. Photo submitted.

“After what has been a tough, serious year for the Grade 12 learners who have been so hard-working and dedicated, a little bit of fun is really in order. It was not all in vain, as it was a great way to give back,” Lauren said.

For learners to participate in the enjoyment of the three days, each was asked to donate tinned food parcels, which will be handed over to the ground staff at the school who, as Lauren noted, “… have worked tirelessly to ensure that our educators, administrative staff and children at the school have been in a sanitized, clean environment to continue as ‘normal’ as possible and ensure that everybody at KHS is safe”.
