The Kagiso Police and other law-enforcement agencies are doing their best to ensure that perpetrators of gender-based violence are stopped, brought to book and rehabilitated.
“Despite the national outcry by all sectors of our society, there are still men out there who would not stop inflicting physical and psychological pain on women,” said Captain Solomon Sibiya, Kagiso Police spokesperson.
Sibiya said in the latest incident on Saturday, 5 September, Kagiso Police arrested and detained a 58-year-old man after he allegedly strangled and assaulted his wife at their home in Swanieville.
The victim told police she was home at about 8.30pm when her husband came home intoxicated. He went into their bedroom where he allegedly attacked and strangled her. The man maintained that he had recorded his wife and accused her of having an affair.
The woman overpowered her husband and managed to escape. She later screamed for help as he attempted to follow her,” Sibiya explained.
Members of the community responded after the victim escaped and then phoned the police. The husband was arrested and later detained at the Kagiso Police Station. He already appeared in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court on charges of assault under domestic violence.
“We will not negotiate gender-based violence. Anyone who defies this important national call will face the full might of the law, and there will be no mercy,” warned Brigadier Themba Maduna, Kagiso Police station commander.
