Company vehicle hijacked, victim disarms suspect

Police's swift response to a hijacking led to the arrest of three suspects, the recovery of a company vehicle and the getaway vehicle, which turned out to be stolen as well.

A foiled carjacking and armed robbery recently led to the arrest of three suspects between the ages of 36 and 60 in Kagiso Extension 11 on Tuesday, 6 October.

Captain Solomon Sibiya, Kagiso Police spokesperson said the victim told police that he is a company sales consultant and was visiting a few shops in Extension 11 and taking orders.

He parked his company vehicle in front of a shop and while he was busy inside, two people entered, pretending to be customers.

“He stepped aside, allowing them space to buy, but instead two others also appeared and at gunpoint demanded cash and the vehicle keys from the victim,” Sibiya said. One of the thugs subsequently sped off in the victim’s company vehicle.

The armed robber who remained behind wrestled with the victim who ended up disarming him. The disarmed robber ran to a getaway vehicle in which his two accomplices were waiting.”

They then fled the scene in their getaway vehicle, a Honda Ballade, but police managed to track them down and recover the company vehicle. It turned out the suspects’ getaway vehicle was reported stolen in Soweto recently. Sibiya said that one suspect is still on the run.

Police are searching for him and continuing with their investigation.

The three who were arrested will appear in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court and face charges of hijacking, armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and of a reportedly stolen vehicle.

Brigadier Themba Maduna, the Kagiso Police station commander applauded the police members for their swift response which led to the apprehension of the suspects.

We will, at all times, strive to squeeze the space for criminals and make it difficult for them to execute their evil plans,” he said.
