Murder-accused sympathises with victim’s family

Vorster will be appearing in court for the murder of Hetta Potgieter soon, but first she wanted to get something off her chest.

Sheila Mandy Vorster who is one of the accused in the murder of the 85-year-old Hetta Potgieter will be appearing in court soon. Hetta was murdered in the Macadamia Care Centre in Nelspruit on 8 July 2018.

John du Plooy and Shaun Oosthuizen have also been charged with the murder alongside Vorster. While Vorster has been released on bail of R2 000, Oosthuizen and Du Plooy were both found guilty and sentenced for other murders committed in Alberton and Springs.

With the court case around the corner Vorster spoke to the News about the emotional turmoil she is experiencing.

“I can’t imagine how Hetta Potgieter’s family must be feeling,” she said. She understands that they are heartbroken and angry.

Vorster already said in court she would be pleading not guilty and confirmed this to the News. Vorster, Du Plooy and Oosthuizen admitted to being in Potgieter’s home the day she was murdered, but denied killing her. However, all three still have to plead formally when their hearing starts on 26 October.

She decided to make contact with the News to get something off her chest. Even though she maintains her innocence inside and outside of court, she has compassion for the Potgieter family and is very sorry about their loss.

“I am so sorry about what happened to their mother. I know she was also a grandmother, an aunt and a mother. People loved her, just like I have people who love me.”

Being accused of the murder has been difficult and goes hand in hand with high legal costs, but Vorster knows that she is lucky to be with her family, something that Hetta Potgieter’s loved ones can never experience again.

Vorster’s case will be heard in court on 26 October.
